The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Jesse H. Lumn, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, on 29 September 1918. Although he was wounded by machine gun bullets in both legs in the attack on Exermont, he refused to go to the rear and for more than 2 hours continued to carry ammunition to his gun in action, until he fell exhausted.
