The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Private Henry S. Wells, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 September 1864, while serving with Company C, 148th New York Infantry, in action at Chapin’s Farm, Virginia. With two comrades, Private Wells took position in advance of the skirmish line, within short distance of the enemy’s gunners, and drove them from their guns.
