The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph E. Paluzzi (ASN: 0-1324947), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in the vicinity of *****, Normandy France. While Lieutenant Paluzzi’s platoon was pinned down by enemy machine gun and mortar fire, the enemy brought up two tanks. Calling to the platoon to direct their fire on the enemy machine guns and riflemen, he moved into the open and fired three rounds with a rocket launcher at the tanks, disorganizing the enemy to such an extent that the platoon was able to withdraw successfully in the face of superior enemy fire. After the withdrawal one of the enemy tanks was seen burning. Lieutenant Paluzzi’s calmness and leadership under fire were an inspiration to his men and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
