The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Marvin L. Painter, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 44th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Embermeuil, France, on 14 November 1944. Sloshing through snow under machine gun and sniper fire, Private Painter gave medical aid to twelve men who were wounded on the battle field. He continued working after a bullet had pierced his leg and ceased his efforts only when he was so seriously wounded in the right arm and shoulder that he could no longer continue. He refused to leave until the other wounded were evacuated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
