The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Bennett F. Osborn (ASN: 35897874), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 January 1945 in Hatten, France. During an extremely heavy enemy artillery barrage, the command post of Corporal Osborn’s mortar platoon was destroyed as well as the ammunition and mortars of the platoon. Among the several casualties were the platoon sergeant, two section sergeants and two squad leaders. Although wounded, Corporal Osborn immediately reported the situation to his commanding officer and then returned to the platoon position to stand guard against enemy attacks. Although wounded once more while on guard, he remained at his post until defensive positions were reorganized and relief was available. The indomitable courage and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Osborn reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
