The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Edgar L. Baril (ASN: 31383779), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on the nights of 20 and 21 January 1944, when his infantry company started across a river under heavy enemy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire. In the face of vastly superior odds, his magnificent courage and devotion to duty serves as an outstanding example and inspiration to all who witnessed his action. His gallant action reflects greatest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
