The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Oscar Paul Lippe (ASN: 1707011), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near the Vesle River, France, 29 August 1918. Sergeant Lippe saw a wounded comrade 50 yards away and immediately started to his assistance across an open space covered by machine-gun and sniper fire. He was killed attempting to reach his comrade.
