The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William Thomas Oliver, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving with the 2d Platoon, Company F, 2d Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action on 1 March 1945, in Germany. In the attack against the town of Loveling, the 2d Platoon was attacking the right flank of the enemy. The forward progress of the platoon was halted by heavy machine gun and small arms fire from well-entrenched positions. Larry Dalton and his platoon sergeant, disregarding personal safety, courageously charged the position in spite of heavy fire, hurling hand grenades and firing their rifles. Their aggressive attack overwhelmed the position and accounted for a considerable number of the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Oliver, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
