The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private] Robert G. Oliver (ASN: 33067532), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Oliver moved fifty yards under savage machine gun fire which prevented a platoon from flanking enemy positions to a place where he could bring fire on the gun. Although the enemy gunners saw him and directed the full fury of their fire at him, he gallantly continued firing and succeeded in knocking the position out, killing the two gunners and silencing their weapon. By his heroic action, the platoon was able to continue the advance and drive the enemy from the area. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Oliver, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
