The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant (Infantry) Lovick Pierce Lingo, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 328th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Cornay, France, October 9 – 10, 1918. Lieutenant Lingo was with an attacking party, which, after driving off the enemy, was counterattacked and surrounded. Upon being called on to surrender, he refused, and despite the fact that ten men had been shot down in trying to get away, fought his way out and, though wounded, reached his own lines. Later, when Lieutenant Lingo learned that his company ‘was without officers, he returned and remained with it for several days until weakness from his wound forced his evacuation.
