The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Edwin H. Oland (ASN: 0-20340816), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 July 1944, in France. Technical Sergeant Oland was assigned to duty with an infantry unit attacking strongly-held enemy positions. In the face of heavy enemy small arms fire which had felled several of his comrades, Technical Sergeant Oland crawled forward from a position of comparative safety to administer first aid and evacuate the wounded. After returning one wounded man to safety, he voluntarily attempted to remove another, at which time he was himself seriously wounded. The courage and unselfishness displayed by Technical Sergeant Oland reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
