Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 47 (August 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Gordon H. Oakes (ASN: 34813621), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1944. Private Oakes was assigned to duty as a truck drive with an artillery unit. A barrage of hostile artillery fell on the area, which wounded two men. Despite the falling shells, Private Oakes left the safety of his covered shelter and rushed to the side of his wounded comrades, administering first aid and bringing them to safety. The gallant deed was an inspiration to all members of the organization. The personal bravery and courageous initiative exhibited by Private Oaks reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
