Headquarters, 83d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 44 (September 28, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Joseph Nunes (ASN: 31223771), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Field Artillery Battalion, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 July 1944, near *****, France. After a bridgehead was established across a swamp, Private Nunes and another man were sent back across the swamp to lay wire to the forward observation post. In the course of performing this mission they were subjected to enemy artillery fire, both were rendered unconscious by the concussion and the other man was wounded. When he recovered consciousness, Private Nunes assisted his wounded comrade to the aid station for medical treatment and then both returned to the swamp and completed the mission. Through the effective artillery support that was made possible by their heroic actions the infantry was able to continue its advance. The conspicuous devotion to duty and heroic courage of this enlisted man reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
