The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Daniel J. Noyes (ASN: 11117965), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. While serving as a Platoon Runner with his platoon, which was acting as protection for a platoon of medium tanks, the tanks and the supporting infantry force were subjected to an attack which caused disorganization among the ranks. Private First Class Noyes’ platoon leader was captured in the bitter fight which ensued. As soon as he learned that his platoon leader was missing and not knowing that he was a prisoner of war, Private First Class Noyes voluntarily attempted to locate him. Despite heavy enemy fire and friendly artillery fire which was now being directed on the attacking enemy Private First Class Noyes continued to move about the dangerous area. Though danger from capture by the enemy was also imminent, he continued his heroic efforts to find his leader until forced to withdraw by direct fire from an enemy armored vehicle. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Noyes, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
