The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Robert R. Northcutt (ASN: 34656871), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 December 1944 in France. When a defensive roadblock was attacked by enemy infantry and tanks, Sergeant Northcutt employed rifle grenades in an attempt to halt the enemy force. Frequently exposing himself to direct fire from enemy tanks and infantry, Sergeant Northcutt, by the fierceness of his fire and the coordinated fires of his squad, forced the numerically superior enemy to withdraw. By his exemplary leadership, Sergeant Northcutt prevented two squads of his platoon from being isolated by the enemy. The leadership and courageous action displayed by Sergeant Northcutt reflect high credit on the Armed Forces of the United States.
