The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Marcus L. North (ASN: 20420782), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 April 1945, in Germany. While advancing, Technical Sergeant North’s squad was pinned down by enemy machine gun, small arms, and rocket fire. Quickly surveying the situation, Technical Sergeant North skirted the flank of the enemy position and approached to within thirty yards of the machine gun. He then opened fire with his carbine, killing the gunner. Another of the enemy fired a rocket at Technical Sergeant North which burst only five yards away, but, unshaken by this, he turned his fire on the rocket launcher gunner and wounded him. With their principal weapons silenced, seven of the enemy surrendered to Technical Sergeant North and his companions, and the remainder withdrew. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant North, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
