The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur E. Noland (ASN: 0-1324283), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 September 1944 in the vicinity of *****, France. Although wounded at the outset of an attack against strongly-fortified enemy positions, Lieutenant Noland continued to lead his mortar section. Moving to an exposed position on top of a hedgerow, he directed the fire of his mortars with such effectiveness that the enemy resistance was broken. Through his unselfish concern for the success of the attack and through his display of great personal cou7rage, his men delivered such accurate fire against the enemy that it contributed directly to the success of the attack.
