The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Richard H. Nixon (ASN: 35418079), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 7th Infantry Division on 5 February 1944 in the Kwajalein campaign. When acting as a platoon scout in an assault on an enemy-held island, Private First Class Nixon, seeing his comrade hit by enemy fire, on his own initiative and withy utter disregard for his own safety, crawled forward under vicious enemy fire to assist his comrade and render first aid. Finding his comrade so severely wounded that he was unable to be moved, Private First Class Nixon administered a dosage of morphine and in attempting to move back to get assistance, was hit and instantly killed by a burst of machine-gun fire. Private First Class Nixon’s display of gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in sacrificing his life to save that of his wounded comrade was and continues to be a source of inspiration to the men of his unit, and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
