The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Risto M. Niemi (ASN: 15322141), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. Private First Class Niemi was assigned to duty as a rifleman with an infantry group. During an attack when his comrades were surprised by a well concealed enemy machine gun which threatened to destroy them all, Private First Class Niemi fearlessly risked his life by attacking the hostile troops from an exposed position in order to give his comrades time to withdraw to safety. By this voluntary act, Private First Class Niemi saved the lives of his comrades, and he continued to perform this service until wounds incapacitated him. The personal heroism and gallant unselfishness exhibited by Private Niemi reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service.
