(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Howard E. Nicholson (ASN: 0-1318652), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On the afternoon of 24 May 1944, near ****, Italy, First Lieutenant Nicholson, while reconnoitering enemy positions, shot and killed an enemy sniper during a short, fierce fire fight. This fight drew the concentrated fire of 20 enemy riflemen, and with bullets whipping all about (remainder of citation missing). His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
