The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Richard R. Nichols (ASN: 16065467), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 311th Field Artillery Battalion, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12, 13, and 14 July 1944 in France. At a time when casualties had caused a shortage of officers Corporal Nichols was acting as forward observer for his battery. For three days he performed his task despite the fact that he was repeatedly exposed to heavy enemy mortar and machine gun fire. He advanced under this fire to a point within one hundred yards of an enemy position and directed artillery fire upon it resulting in the neutralization of the emplacement. For his gallantry under fire and his tireless devotion to duty, Corporal Nichols reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
