Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 70 (May 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William J. Newman, Jr. (ASN: 37607086), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 January 1945 in France. During an attack by friendly forces on the strongly contested town of Rittershoffen, Private Newman emplaced his machine gun in the center of his company’s sector and brought deadly fire to bear against an enemy strongpoint, maintaining his fire until friendly forces had occupied the position. However, a huge volume of enemy fire forced his company to withdraw, and although twice wounded in the chest Private Newman continued to fire, covering the withdrawal until the company was again entrenched in its original positions. He died just as his task was completed, exhorting the men around him to carry on the fight. The great courage and steadfastness under fire displayed by Private Newman reflect the highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
