The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick C. Neuberger, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Talomo, Mindanao, Philippine Islands, on 2 June 1945. When an Infantry regiment of which he was a member was engaged with the enemy along the Baqneal Road, Second Lieutenant Neuberger was ordered to lead a reconnaissance patrol to locate a force of approximately 20 Japanese reported to be in the left rear of the regiment near the Talomo River, to determine their armament and defense positions, and to kill as many of the enemy as possible. He led a patrol of 14 men to the vicinity of the reported enemy location, and maneuvered his men to within 10 yards of the enemy position without being detected. They found the Japanese to be well-entrenched in long zig-zap trenches and spider holes on commanding ground which afforded them a clear field of fire. Using three of his men to set up a base of covering fire, Second Lieutenant Neubert led the remaining eleven men along a covered route to within a distance of ten feet of the enemy position. His skillful timing and maneuvers achieved complete surprise, and he led his men in a rifle and grenade assault upon the entrenched enemy, killing five Japanese soldiers and clearing the trench. Before returning, he reconnoitered the positions for intelligence information. Although during this entire action heavy enemy rifle and machine gun fire was brought to bear on his men by the enemy on both flanks, Second Lieutenant Neuberger brought his men through this engagement without suffering a casualty. Second Lieutenant Neuberger’s leadership, initiative, and courage are in accord with the highest military traditions and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
