(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Gustin MacAllister Nelson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Hurtgen Forest in Belgium, in 1944. Colonel Nelson was ordered to take command of the Regiment when it was cut off behind German lines. He took a four-man patrol of volunteers, went into the forest by night, fought off a German patrol, located his command, and brought it safely back to the American lines. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Nelson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
