The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Jacob Levine (ASN: 1697649), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Juvin, France, 1 November 1918. While his company was being attacked from three sides and the terrific enemy fire had caused many casualties in the ranks, Private Levine volunteered and carried a message to the left flank. After he had advanced about 10 yards he was killed by a deluge of machine-gun bullets.
