The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry W. Nash (ASN: 0-1325410), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 20 July 1944, in France. Second Lieutenant Nash commanded an infantry unit during an attack against strongly held enemy territory. During the assault, he was severely wounded by an antipersonnel mine, the blast of which amputated one of his feet. Turning over his command to a subordinate, he administered first aid to himself. Despite his painful injury, he remained on the battlefield for six hours, refusing to be evacuated, in order that he could warn other elements against crossing through the mine field. Second Lieutenant Nash as subjected to heavy hostile mortar and artillery fire throughout his vigil, and was wounded again by shrapnel before he was evacuated. His superb devotion to duty and unselfish gallantry doubtlessly saved the lives of several of his comrades. Such conduct reflects great credit on Second Lieutenant Nash and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
