The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Edward J. Nannery (ASN: 42047444), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 April 1945, in Germany. Staff Sergeant Nannery, leading a platoon in an attack, quickly seized the situation when attack upon his men seemed possible from adjacent buildings. By exposing himself and with utter disregard for personal danger he effectively returned fire from an upper story of a building, thus eliminating the threat and with his fire all but silenced the enemy. His gallant action weakened the enemy strongpoint and reduced the deadly fire coming from it. His extreme courage, leadership, and loyal devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
