The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charlie E. Lemmon (ASN: 44337), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 9 October 1918. Sergeant Lemmon alone charged an enemy machine-gun, capturing the gun and two German soldiers. He was seriously wounded while in the successful execution of this mission. His timely capture of the gun made it possible for his company to advance and organize their objective with few casualties.
