The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Samuel Lemma (ASN: 542066), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 7th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Belleau Wood, France, 18 June 1918. After being severely wounded in the leg, Private Lemma exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire in order to give medical attention to other wounded. His activities after being wounded caused a serious hemorrhage, which resulted in his death from loss of blood.
