The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant John Legnosky (ASN: 650215), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 58th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-de-Malaumont, east of Brieulles, France, 4 October 1918. Although painfully wounded in the foot on 4 October First Sergeant Legnosky remained on duty with his company. After his company commander had been killed he assumed command of the company and efficiently led it in action until the unit was released on 7 October 1918. He repeatedly exposed himself to heavy fire in order to better control his men.
