The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant George E. Morris (ASN: 20458084), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Germany. Technical Sergeant Morris was serving as a Platoon Sergeant with an Infantry Regiment engaged in an assault on the Siegfried Line. During the action, an enemy counterattack overran some of our positions to recapture territory previously gained by our forces. The hostile thrust consisted of two tanks supported by a company of infantry and so vigorous was the assault that Technical Sergeant Morris and about thirty of his comrades were completely surrounded. Assuming command of the group, Technical Sergeant Morris elected to fight rather than surrender. For six hours enemy pressure was intense, but Technical Sergeant Morris so inspired his companions by his gallant leadership that the enemy was driven back, having lost their tanks and suffered many casualties. By his courageous endeavors, Technical Sergeant Morris wrought a defeat upon a numerically superior enemy force out of what appeared to be a hopeless situation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Morris, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
