The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Joseph W. Morgan (ASN: 0-466845), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Belgium on 18 December 1944. While leading elements of his battalion to new defensive positions, Captain Morgan’s group was halted by an enemy roadblock. Immediately grasping the situation, Captain Morgan sent his column forward and exposing himself to the heavy enemy small arms fire, charged the enemy with his submachine gun and hand grenades. While busily occupying the enemy with his fire, he cleverly directed his men over another route, detouring the road block. Captain Morgan and four of his men acted as rear guards and rejoined their group only after the battalion was well on its way past the enemy strongpoint. By his leadership and gallant action, Captain Morgan reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
