The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David W. Morgan (ASN: 0-1322069), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Germany. When his battalion found itself without either wire or radio communication with the forward battalion, First Lieutenant Morgan, Battalion Intelligence Officer, volunteered to make an attempt to get through a heavy enemy artillery concentration and ascertain the location of the other battalion. Despite the darkness and the heavy shelling, First Lieutenant Morgan made his way on foot across two miles of unfamiliar terrain and successfully contacted the other battalion. First Lieutenant Morgan’s courageous determination to perform his duty, despite the hazard to himself, contributed to the success of a subsequent coordinated attack by the two battalions. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Morgan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
