The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private] Russell G. Moore (ASN: 32956500), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 July 1944, in *****, France. In the course of a daylight patrol, the Sergeant in charge was wounded when the patrol was fired upon by machine guns and automatic pistols. Staff Sergeant Moore immediately consumed and, disregarding the bitter enemy fire, completed the mission. The information which he secured enabled the unit to accurately locate and destroy the enemy emplacements in the line of attack and assured the success of the operation. Staff Sergeant Moore’s exemplary performance of duty, resolute initiative and conspicuous courage reflect great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
