The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fourth Grade Herbert Hugh Moore (ASN: 34231493), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Assigned to duty as a cook with an infantry organization which was fired upon from the rear, Technician Fourth Grade Moore voluntarily led a patrol to investigate. An enemy patrol of numerically superiority was discovered. In order to deceive the enemy as to the size of his own patrol, Technician Fourth Grade Moore opened fire, moving from position to position to simulate a larger force, while he directed the remainder of the patrol to circle to the flank. The enemy patrol was routed, many were killed during the fire fight and the ensuing pursuit. Technician Fourth Grade Moore was killed in the performance of these duties. The intelligent leadership, personal courage, and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Moore reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
