The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John H. Montgomery (ASN: 38183931), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 July 1944, in France. Private First Class Montgomery was assigned to an infantry organization making an attack against the enemy. During the ensuing fire fight, Private First Class Montgomery and several of his comrades were wounded. Despite his painful wounds and the continuing heavy hostile fire, Private First Class Montgomery, with complete disregard for himself, administered first aid to his fellow soldiers and assisted in evacuating them to an aid station before he sought aid for himself. His courageous actions, performed despite his wounds and at great risk to his life, doubtlessly saved the lives of a number of his wounded comrades. The personal fortitude, loyalty, and complete unselfishness exhibited by Private First Class Montgomery in these actions reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service.
