The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William T. Moffett (ASN: 33035382), United States Army, for gallantry in action in action against the enemy in Luxembourg, on 19 December 1944, while serving with the Medical Detachment, Provisional Battalion formed from Special Troops, 28th Infantry Division, to defend the town of Wiltz, Luxembourg, during the forceful German Counteroffensive in the Ardennes. When he and his comrades attempted to escape from a German encircling movement approximately forty men were casualties. Sergeant Moffett worked continuously under fire and assisted in establishing an Aid Station and collecting and administering aid to the wounded. Remaining to care for his wounded comrades, Sergeant Moffett was taken prisoner. His self-sacrificing gallantry and his devotion to his fellow soldiers is worthy of emulation and reflect great credit on him and the Armed Forces of the United States.
