The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Roy Jackson Mills (ASN: 38634212), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 April 1945, in Germany. Private First Class Mills’ squad was attacked by an enemy force numbering approximately eighty men. Despite the overwhelming odds against him and his companions, Private First Class Mills remained steadfastly at his position and poured fire at the advancing enemy. After emptying several clips of rifle ammunition, he picked up an abandoned automatic rifle and turned a stream of fire on the enemy. Private First Class Mills was suddenly wounded by the intense fire directed against his position, but he continued resisting gallantly until he was killed. His heroic self-sacrifice inspired his comrades to greater efforts which forced the enemy to withdraw in disorder. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Mills, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
