The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Deloy D. Mills (ASN: 35546867), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 114th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division, in action on 29 March 1945 in the vicinity of Dossenheim, Germany. When the advance of his platoon was momentarily delayed by intense enemy small arms fire, Private Mills unhesitatingly crawled to an exposed position from which he delivered accurate BAR fire upon the hostile installations. Under cover of his fire, his platoon was able to continue to advance. Private Mills then jumped to his feet and assaulted the Germans, firing his weapon from the hip until seriously wounded. Private Mills courageous action is in keeping with the Army’s finest traditions and he merits high praise.
