The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Lawrence N. Miller (ASN: 20412615), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. Technician Fourth Grade Miller was a member of an engineer unit given the assignment of constructing a bridge across which infantry troops were to assault the enemy positions. When the first spans of the bridge were laid, heavy enemy artillery fire hit the bridge and cut the anchor cable. Seeing the destruction of the bridge, Technician Fourth Grade Miller immediately crossed an area which was swept with deadly hostile small arms and mortar fire, to the assembly site where he secured replacements of the damaged bridge sections and returned to the bridge. With courageous calmness, he set about reconstruction, rallying his men to the successful and speedy completion of the mission. The courage, devotion to duty, and daring displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Miller reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
