The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Walter J. Migut (ASN: 0-1310420), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 5th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in France, on 1 September 1944. The half track vehicle in which Staff Sergeant Migut and his squad was riding was hit by fire from 88-mm. and 20-mm. guns and Staff Sergeant Migut was thrown from the vehicle into a roadside ditch. Staff Sergeant Migut, at great risk to his life under intense enemy fire, left the safety of the ditch and made several trips into the then burning half track to extricate the wounded men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Migut, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
