The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Herman G. Metz (ASN: 33130403), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 October 1944, in Germany. When his battery was subjected to several shell fire by the enemy, Corporal Metz and his companions sought protection in a nearby shelter. In the confusion one of his companions sustained a severe injury and no medical supplies were available, so Corporal Metz volunteered to secure some from a neighboring house. Disregarding shells bursting about him, Corporal Metz left his shelter and ran two hundred yards across open ground, returning successfully with the needed medical equipment. His gallantry and unhesitating action under hazardous conditions are well worthy of high praise. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Metz, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
