Headquarters, 41st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 55 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur W. Merrick, United States Army, for gallantry in action while Commanding an Infantry Company of the 41st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Biak Island on 26 June 1944. At dawn, First Lieutenant Merrick led the advance of his company in a movement which completely surprised the enemy and resulted in capture of one of their strongest positions. The progress of his company in the execution of this mission was through heavy fire, and the enemy having the advantage of high ground. When his advance was held up, he crawled to the most forward position to secure a picture of the situation. He then retorted to his battalion commander and his recommendations and clear description aided the commanding officer to quickly maneuver his troops to gain the best possible results. First Lieutenant Merrick was wounded in the hip, but stayed with his company until he had it well organized and resistance had diminished. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
