The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Donald Ralph Menary (ASN: 35588869), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Private First Class Menary was serving with an infantry organization which was engaged in a fierce fight with a determined enemy. Upon seeing two enemy tanks approaching, Private First Class Menary and two of his comrades, voluntarily and without orders, proceeded to advance with their bazookas to a forward position within fifteen yards of the enemy tanks, from which they delivered effective fires which destroyed the enemy tanks. This voluntary and hazardous act not only deprived the enemy of two tanks but the disabled vehicles acted as an effective roadblock for other enemy armor attempting to overrun friendly positions. The personal fortitude and aggressive initiative exhibited by Private First Class Menary reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
