The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Carl O. Meier (ASN: 0-1167979), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division on 9 August 1944, in France. Captain Meier was assigned to duty as Commanding Officer of a Field Artillery unit. An intense shelling by the enemy set fire to a truck loaded with ammunition in the motor park in which Captain Meier’s vehicles were bivouacked. Despite the peril of the exploding ammunition, Captain Meier unhesitatingly ran to the truck and procured a fire extinguisher with which he battled the flames. Despite the fact that enemy artillery was still falling in the area he courageously continued his efforts until the blaze was extinguished. As a result of his action, danger to personnel was averted and valuable properties were saved. The personal courage and unselfish devotion to duty exhibited by Captain Meier reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces.
