The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George E. Meadows (ASN: 0-1306125), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of the Branta River, Italy, on 29 April 1945. On that date, Company I mounted on tanks, was the leading element in the 3d Battalion’s attack, it’s mission being to force a bridgehead on the Branta River. The column was advancing steadily when, suddenly, an enemy convoy of nine trucks halted them and the men dismounted and hastily scattered to take up positions to engage the enemy. An enemy officer leaped from the first vehicle and aimed his pistol at the captain of Company I who was completely unaware of his danger. With superb presence of mind and without thought of his own safety, First Lieutenant Meadows instantly leaped in front of his commanding officer, and with unerring accuracy, quickly shot and killed the enemy major. The enemy had all dismounted to place their many weapons into action and during the savage battle that followed, Second Lieutenant Meadows observed three enemy soldiers moving into position with bazookas in an apparent attempt to destroy our tanks. Without hesitation, First Lieutenant Meadows hastily reorganized his platoon and, after directing his men to follow him, led them in an assault against the enemy. So well directed and accurate was the platoon’s fire power that thirty enemy soldiers were killed and fifty taken prisoner. The intrepid leadership and outstanding bravery displayed by First Lieutenant Meadows excited the respect and esteem of all who witness his dees and adds glory to the achievements of the Infantry Officer.
