The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. McShane, Jr. (ASN: 33340541), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 April 1945, in Germany. When a flight of enemy planes appeared over his battery position, Private First Class McShane dashed to a machine gun nearby and opened fire on them. While operating the gun, one of the planes dropped fragmentation bombs, several of which struck a few yards from his position. However, Private First Class McShane courageously continued firing without interruption. His gallant action prevented the enemy planes from approaching close enough to strafe their position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class McShane, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
