The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Anthony J. Krueger (ASN: 1709796), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Wilhelmplatz, France, 29 September 1918. Sergeant Kruger was ordered to take his platoon and capture a machine gun which was holding up the advance of the company and causing many casualties. Without hesitation, Sergeant Kruger, armed with an automatic pistol, and, with utter disregard for his personal safety, charged the machine gun, stopping only when he was rendered unconscious by two bullet wounds in the neck.
