The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Michael G. McMahon (ASN: 35311064), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 312th Field Artillery Battalion, in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944 in France. While operating a vehicle transporting switchboard operators and equipment into a forward area Corporal McMahon sustained three wounds when the party was attacked by enemy riflemen concealed in ditches along the road. He nonetheless sped his vehicle out of the danger area and would not relinquish control until he had successfully camouflaged the vehicle and had taken measures to effect the safety of the other occupants, all of whom were wounded. For his determination and courage under the most hazardous circumstances, Corporal McMahon reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
