The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Phillip Evans Kriechbaum, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Apremont, France, 3 October 1918. When his company was halted by heavy machine-gun fire, Lieutenant Kriechbaum advanced ahead of his company, thus personally leading them to the attack. He was killed by enemy machine-gun fire while some distance ahead of the first wave. His initiative and heroism were material factors in this operation.
